La Vie Bridal it is!

We went with La Vie Bridal in the end, for our gown/suit package. Signed the agreement just this evening =D

After quite a bit of deliberating, here's why we chose La Vie:
1) They have quite a lot of unique gowns, designed in-house by Jeff. And if you can't find something off-the-rack, we have the made-to-measure option too! Also, most studios only focus on the ladies, giving men a pretty standard (read boring) suit. At La Vie, their suits are not run-of-the-mill at all, they're very eye-catching with a whole list of styles to choose from (and its tailored made-to-measure too, though I only get to keep the pants)!

2) Service is excellent! With Jolene, Lewis and Jeff on hand most days to guide us through, assuring us that they'll be doing their best to make Sherm look great, providing advice on weight management, hair-styling and even giving suggestions for our upcoming Bali photoshoot. He even offered to show us the photos that Lewis took there recently. Its nice to have such a warm and friendly team that we can count on.

3) All-in package consists of: rental of the bridal gown & evening gown (we have a made-to-measure option for either of these), suits, 6 corsages, 2 hand bouquets, trial make-up session, actual day make-up, accessories, selection and multiple alteration sessions, multiple car decorations, and we can swap our photoshoot make-up session for either mom's or a friend's AD make-up. On top of this, La Vie is allowing us to take the outfits with us to Bali at no cost! But we have to be extra careful not to get any oil stains etc (they even suggested possible danger areas we may not have been aware of).

4) Assurances that there will be no further charges (apart frm what is already stated in the contract, and unless we damage the outfits), that they will still be around 1 year later. For La Vie, they WANT you to make a jaw-dropping impression with their gowns. Because they know that when they have made a great impression, they will win more customers through word-of-mouth recommendations.

Even though our wedding is 12 months away now, it seems we were quite early in choosing a wedding gown. But amazingly, our impeccably good timing struck again! We'll be heading to La Vie come mid-January for the gown selection. This is so we have ample time (including the 1-month Chinese New Year break that the gown-maker takes) for the gown/suits to be ready in time for our 17 May Bali photoshoot.

Looking forward to our next meeting with La Vie already!

WOW Manhattan Credit Card - best for high expenses?

I found out about this credit card while surfing on those SG wedding forums. Apparently, you get 5% cashback on expenses above $3001, but the rebate is capped at $300 (ie. for a $6k expenditure). And this is only limited per quarter (ie. Jan - Mar). Just to note, expenses per quarter below that $3001 mark get a lower rebate percentage.

This is better than the Citibank Dividend card, which overtly excludes wedding/hotel expenditure from their rebate scheme. The Manhattan card does not care what you spend on, it just looks at your total expenditure (but excludes expenses incurred through late charges, interest payments etc). Another plus point - the copy in the letters you receive and all that is really fun. Take a look at the website's terms and conditions to get an idea. Oh, and a current offer is that you get free $50 to offset your first bill.

But is it the best offer out there? Anyone know of a better credit card scheme to make your high wedding expenses help in cost-savings? How about point redemptions on other cards?

Find out more about the Manhattan Card here, by Standard Chartered Bank.

P.S. I am not comparing how competitive the interest rates are on any of these cards.

Countdown: 365 Days to 4 Dec 2011!

It's 4th Dec 2010, exactly one year till our wedding day on 4th Dec 2011~!

Our wedding date turned out to be surprisingly popular, with one friend getting married on the same day this year, and one of Dax's cousins on exactly the same date next year (clash!!)... Another of Dax's childhood friends is marrying on 24 Sep 2011, which would have been our first choice date if we went for Swissotel Merchant Court. So many coincidences, it's unbelievable! 2011 is totally going to be a bumper year for weddings, even the newspapers predict it so!

Counting down the days, so many things to do and prepare before then... gown, photographer, room renovations, general tidying up of house, thinking about themes etc... phew!

GO! GO! GO!

Thanks to Jetstar's 6th Birthday Sale, we could get tickets as low as S$108! Although after group booking in 2 batches, plus adding the checked baggage, our average was raised to about S$126. But think about it.. $126 for a 6 day get-away to Bali? AWESOME!!

And we've got our good friends along for the ride too! Come soon Vesak Day!!

Currently making arrangements for our Bali photoshoot

That's right, we've made arrangements with aditiniranjan.com to do a photoshoot in Bali around April-May. This shoot was inspired by Mark & Jackie's wedding shoot in 2009. Thanks for the recommendation, ideas and support!

We'll be having some friends join us in this shoot/holiday. Looking forward to it already!

Looking for: Videographer/Photographer and Gowns

We are currently looking for recommendations for photographers/videographer to record the actual day's events. I know its kind of early, but we managed to get our hands on some vouchers and we need to make some objective comparison first.

We will also commence Shermaine's gown search soon as well. Again because we got a voucher that has a limited duration. We haven't yet decided on renting or making as friends' have advised that making one, or customizing a gown off the rack and buying it might not be any more costly than renting one.

Research research research! Do sound out any recommendations in the comments below, thanks!

Pictures of Grand Park City Hall

(Click for a better look)

This is what the exterior of the hotel looks like. Located on Coleman Street, the area is rich in Singapore history, dating back to over 150 years when George Coleman (Singapore's first architect and advisor to Sir Raffles) himself lived. The courtyard of the hotel leading into the ground floor restaurant, Indulge, is probably the historic portion that has been integrated into the design of the newer hotel building. The hotel reception/lounge area is dominated by a skylight that lets in natural light and highlights the light brown marble that covers both the floor and wall surfaces. There are some famous eateries here including Indulge and Park Palace restaurant. There is also a water feature here where some couples may choose to have outdoor solemnizations.

The wedding show (02/10/10) - A Wedding Symphony

(Click for a better look)

The Grand Ballroom is quite nice, a selling point would be the newly completed renovation only a few weeks ago. Click here to read my earlier comments on the hotel and ballroom. Unfortunately, there's a maximum capacity of about only 300 people, ie. 30 tables. So we'll sadly have to trim down our guest-list for the dinner itself, and hope our friends don't mind joining in our celebration only at the Mass at Church. The pictures here were taken during our little sneak preview and during the wedding show that was held the Saturday after we signed with GPCH (we inked the deal on 01/10/10 - Children's Day!).

Tours were conducted of the 2 rooms on display today - The Governor's Suite and the Oriental Suite. Both types have their own perks, although if I had a choice, I'd like to mix the Oriental Suite's decor with the Governor's Suite's space and outdoor jacuzzi. According to the guide, there are 7 suites in total, but all suites are subject to availability on checking-in.

We got to sample the food during the show, and we agree with the online comments - the Wasabi Prawns are fantastic! Succulent with an excellent batter. Furthermore, we were 1 of the 10 winners of a lucky draw prize! Considering the excellent package and the perks we've received so far, we're REALLY glad we went with this hotel!

Hotel Hunting

We searched high and low, did our research and went for several site inspections. Our hopes were raised and dashed, and finally, we are now this close to signing the contract with the hotel of our choice.

From the very start, I compiled a list of over 20 hotels from Singapore Brides forum, with their package's perks and table prices, as well as other misc information. Our first choices were shortlisted by name - hotels we recognized and liked, or had some history with.

Swissotel Merchant Court caught our eye and was a very bright star especially since they had a very attractive package without need to bargain for much else. They also had the most *gorgeous* Bridal Suite with a great view of Clark Quay (or Ministry of Manpower, depending on which window you looked out of). Unfortunately, they had very few available dates, and since it was the first hotel we viewed, we decided to take it easy and see what the rest had to offer first.

Grand Hyatt, smelled of opulence (actually it smelled like cigarettes), was always crowded and brought many fond memories of my CJ days here visiting the marbled toilets after school. Unfortunately, we came away with a very cheap feeling after our site inspection here. Imagine this, the coordinator actually gave us Hyatt-branded water from plastic bottles to drink. Wow. Of course, they also withheld a lot of perks that we had to almost beg for and still not get. No thank you (to make matters worse, the coordinator took 2 weeks to get back to me on available dates, even after a reminder...)

Goodwood Park
hotel was a very cosy colonial hotel that put stars in Shermaine's eyes. We were very enchanted with the idea of holding a wedding lunch here, and not bothering about a dinner, but unfortunately, this notion was met with a lot of resistance from my parents. They just didn't think that a wedding should end on a lunch. And that was our dreams of a colonial wedding dashed, since we really couldn't afford to host a weekend dinner here (it was nearly S$1500/table nett).

Fairmont was our next site inspection, which was also Swissotel The Stamford located at Raffles City. The ballrooms were at the 4th floor of the Raffles City shopping area, and both hotels shared the same Manager of Romance, who showed us 4 really opulent ballrooms with awesome technology, high ceilings, decor and mega-top tables. However, the idea of having a wedding in a convention centre-like venue was the big negative factor for us. That and the package costing a little more than our top choice then, Merchant Court, gave rise to our hesitance. They did however have our ideal date available.

Hotel Fort Canning (previously The Legends Country Club) was a recently done up ballroom with a large reception area and garishly gold chandeliers. Our impression of this place was clouded mainly by our entry. The exterior of the venue is very very lovely - historic colonial structure with lion statues and waterfalls, set amidst lush greenery. It won us over. Until we saw the ballroom. It really did feel like an upgraded country club, and it didn't help that their decorative themes seemed a little lacking. I'm sure once Hotel Fort Canning is up and running that the package and price they command will make a lot more sense. However, we're risk averse and decided not to proceed with our initial booking here.

Which leads us to the long-awaited Grand Park City Hall. This hotel was a last minute find, and was not on my initial list at all. I chanced upon it when searching for "colonial wedding" on Google. The building won a prestigious Architectural Heritage Award, and initial pictures online painted an art deco look that was akin to Batman's Gotham City but white-washed (I'm a comic fan and it really really appealed to me). Furthermore, the ends of the ballroom had this huge calligraphy tapestry on the walls, and that got my attention as well as I felt it lent the venue a nice oriental touch! It did take 2 weeks to arrange a meet-up with the coordinator, during which, a few of our initial choice dates were taken right under our noses. This led to me making a tentative booking for our last option, the 4th Dec 2011, even before our site inspection.

Shermaine and I actually went to GPCH on a weekend by ourselves to walk around and get a feel of the hotel first. We sat in the reception area to peruse their wedding packages and what we saw really enticed us and we just couldn't wait for the formal meeting. The day eventually came and to my surprise, the ballroom was not what I remembered from the pics! Christopher, the coordinator, then informed me that the ballroom had just been renovated 3 weeks earlier. So the art deco style is gone, as are the calligraphy tapestries. In place are more grand-looking chandeliers and stylishly patterned red walls. Shermaine says the look is less rigid this way, allowing couples to make the ballroom "theirs" with a little custom decoration. Ok, admittedly, I was a little disappointed but looking at it objectively, the changes didn't make the ballroom look worse, it was definitely nicer than many places we saw previously. Then came the package discussion.

The package was very similar to Merchant Court's and the only issue we had was with the beer which we couldn't get free-flow, but we did manage to get 4 barrels of 30 litres each, which should be sufficient. We could get a few special entitlements if we signed up for the Gold membership with Park Hotels. Food-wise, we knew the food here was good, coming from Park Palace restaurant, and reviewed by Keropok Man (one of Sherm's fave food blogs). Service-wise, I got the impression from forums that the service staff here would take very good care of us. The issue we had was with the coordinator, Christopher, whom I did not have a good impression of, as he made us wait 25 mins for him (after which I had to force an apology out of him too!). However, he had been prompt in his emails, albeit curt, and the staff were busy as they were holding a wedding show on 2nd Oct. Furthermore, they were not actually allowing tentative bookings due to the upcoming show but he made us an exception. So I forgive him. =)

Since Merchant Court's 9th Oct 2011 date had been confirmed following a corporate booking, we had no choice but to go with GPCH's date. It wasn't quite "settling", though they weren't our 1st choice. Admittedly, the difference in comparison aren't very great, and in the end, I'm actually quite comfortable and happy to have gotten the date and booking settled.

Besides, they have some really nice Bridal Suites too!

Ok, this post has gone on for far too long, and is probably more detailed than anyone cares for. Thanks for reading, feel free to drop us a note in the comments section!

The Proposal: 24th July 2010

We watched the setting sun fade into purple hues on the west beach of Railay, Krabi, as I surprised her with "Grow Old With You" (the song from 'The Wedding Singer' that I had always wanted to sing to the one I'd marry). I got down onto one knee, and then asked her to marry me.

She said "yes"....

And thus began our journey, as two individuals decided to become a couple.
